I know little from Star Trek, but there's a scene that left a strong impression on me some time ago. In season 7, episode 5 of "Star Trek The Next Generation", Data temporarily assumes the title of Captain and Worf becomes the First Officer. However, the dynamic between the two is imperfect, as Worf openly criticizes the acting Captain, leading to the following exchange:
Everything about that scene is perfect. Both men show an impressive level of discipline and professionalism. While keeping their calm, they make their point. Data, being the captain, is decisive regarding his expectations and the outcome should they not be met. The way Worf is able to quickly reflect on his behavior and apologize is impressive. I love how they wish to maintain their friendship regardless of their challenges working together in this new situation.
I strive to become as professional as those two are. The ability to share direct negative feedback calmly and effectively, and for this feedback to be taken in right away and acted upon, is too rare. Thankfully, we can improve ourselves. I find that having role models in mind, or even scenes like this one, helps put these principles into practice.
